A Successful Learning Environmemnt
Located in an established area of Etobicoke, Josyf Cardinal Slipyj Catholic School, like many other educational facilities, relied on portable classrooms to address the needs of a growing student population. ATA’s design for a new seven-classroom addition provided extra space so many of the students could be relocated back within the school.
ATA’s master plan also included a new double gymnasium and a performance stage. The creation of a biowall and other measures addressed potential flooding issues, as the storm services were inadequate for the site. A unique outdoor learning area and a fluid kindergarten play space (that enveloped the end of the new building) enhanced the quality of the school’s exterior playground. The addition’s relationship to the landscape was further emphasized through the use of strong horizontal elements and soaring roof overhangs. Large ribbon windows and expansive ceiling heights created bright, spacious classrooms conducive to a successful learning environment.
