The Times They Are a-Changin’

The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) knew they had to evolve. With students able to access up-to-date resources through their tablets and handheld devices, learning centres had to adapt to the changes in technology. As a result, the TCDSB hired ATA Architects to totally rethink the existing Catholic Education Centre Library/Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts Library. The goal was to create “education commons” with more open and flexible spaces to accommodate the new ways that students learn. Instead of traditional seating areas, ATA’s solution was to fill the space with comfortable chairs, modern furnishings and storage units. Contemporary patterns and colour schemes were adopted to create a more inviting environment. And the totally revised atrium space became the anchor, creating a striking new landscape for students to view from the floors above.
