The Flower City Seniors Centre in Brampton is a meeting place for area seniors and runs specialized fitness, educational, dance, games and arts and crafts programs. The existing cafeteria is at capacity and will be expanded to meet the needs of the community. The new space has been designed to shade the interior in the summer and allow sunlight into the space during the winter months, while the sloped roof facilitates natural convection to efficiently exhaust CO2 from the space. The addition is now under construction.
Created for Vrancor, Oasis is a 40,000 sq.ft. office complex at the intersection of Mainway and Lampman in Burlington. The program consisted of maximizing the amount of commercial office space that could be developed on the site while maintaining a landscaped area of at least 25%. The client was looking for an innovative and flexible solution in a region that is dominated by box style offices and light industrial buildings. Oasis is comprised of two equal wings that extend from an entry courtyard, reminiscent of a Palladian structure. The second floor bridges the two sections and the ground level units are stepped to provide individual identity.
The light coloured metal panels and the rounded edges provide a clear contemporary quality. Two levels of parking are tucked into an existing landscaped berm at the rear of the property, separating the commercial and residential use.
The scope of work for Humber Backfill “D” was to transform the windowless JF, Funeral Space into a bright and cheery daycare centre. It required the construction of a new link to connect FX with the existing daycare. ATA was able to tackle all of the challenging aspects of this project while completing the design assignment on schedule. The renovation included demolishing all existing rooms in the funeral service areas and creating new classrooms for the infants and toddlers; an observation room; a staff room; an office and other auxiliary rooms.
As the link encroached under an existing building, the College required that the link blend in, utilizing similar materials and colours. ATA’s use of BIM allowed the daycare staff to fully understand their new space prior to construction. The project is now ready for the daycare, which is reopening in early January of 2017. The study of the High Park Nature Centre is now complete. It is a three-part study that includes a cultural heritage evaluation; a due diligence report and a conceptual design and budget for the restoration and renovation of the building. It was critical that the design proposal meet the the needs of the expanding program. In the early 1900’s, the facility had an important role as a place for children with tuberculosis to recover. In time, the facility evolved into a summer school for underprivileged and undernourished children. Although the school no longer exists, the Nature Centre continues programs for children and people of all ages.
The Saint Athanasius Community Centre is a proposed 9,800sm (105,000sf) addition to the pre-existing Coptic Christian Orthodox centre in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The Saint Athanasius Community Centre is currently in the schematic design phase. The driving force behind the design has been to compliment the existing architecture of the two churches. The strong verticality of the existing structures is juxtaposed by the subtle horizontality of the new development. There will be a strong connection between street and building as the community centre creates a unique backdrop to the original church with views opening into the two-storey glazed performance space.
The Torgan Medical Office Building at the new Oakville Hospital on the Halton Health Services site is well underway. The steel frame is largely up for this 4 storey, 80,000 sq.ft. class ‘A’ office building. It will be a state-of-the-art facility at the entrance to the hospital site. Designed in conjunction with MSA Architects the building is destined to be a local landmark. The glass and aluminum cladding with the use of brick and Muskoka granite will create a humane and welcoming building.
In order to provide barrier free access to the McMaster University Campus Bookstore at the main entrance, interior walls on North and East side of vestibule were removed to increase the floor area. The existing stairs within the vestibule were removed and a 1/2 wall rolling shutter door was provided for the proposed book return area. The architectural scheme was a modest and thoughtful play of forms meant to integrate within the context of the existing building in a manner that downplayed any form of architectural intervention – a quiet nod to the existing architecture and context.

The Town of Grimsby is seeking to develop a one-acre site near the QEW. ATA’s unique proposal design is for a 60,000-square-foot building that houses commercial space at ground level and 4 storeys of residential space above. This distinct structure creates a bold statement by juxtaposing striking dark elements with lighter ones. As for the residential units, they are angled in such a way as to give residents a lakefront view. The end result is a viable mixed-use centre that proves beneficial to the retail stores and the tenants.
Formerly the Metropolitan Building Materials yard, this downtown Toronto site – at 354 Pape Avenue – is being completely revitalized. Proposed as a mixed-use property by ATA, the building’s design features one storey of retail at ground level, a second floor of artist studios and 60 additional units occupying the higher levels. A playful pattern of coloured glass and a wall of creeping plants (which extend up the building) provide visual interest and intrigue to the structure. The Pape project is well underway and we’ll be sure to keep you up to date on developments.
The Bell Gairdner Estate, a Mississauga heritage landmark originally built back in 1938, was in dire need of restoration. Located along the shores of Lake Ontario, the city decided to convert the building and surrounding lands into a public park. When it came time to select a firm to lead the retrofit, the City of Mississauga chose ATA for its extensive experience with similar projects, including the recent rehabilitation of the historic Merchant’s Bank. ATA’s winning proposal ensured that the grounds would be suitable for various events (see rendering above). Restoration to the original structure has already begun with excitement building for the grand opening slated for summer 2013.
